A day at the races – retro style

Hello Lovelies,

I have been fortunate enough to have been a guest at the races a few times now and I always have a great time. I must admit I am usually more at home in jeans and a polo shirt with a pair of wellies and a wax jacket than in a posh frock but it’s nice to dress up once in a while isn’t it?

You can get a slight inkling of how the combined outfit might look as its not a million miles away from the style I wore for my wedding in Las Vegas

5 quick tips for dressing with summer style

5 quick tips for dressing with summer style

Hello Lovelies,

After having my summer holiday early (boo) it occurred to me that regardless of the climate or location, there’s 5 top tips for dressing with style which always apply.

I know every summer for work I live in linen trousers as I find them a good combination of cooling, chic and practical and they are even versatile enough to travel with…. I like a good mixed blend to keep creasing at bay! Damn those creases.

Being a plus size girly, there’s always fabrics I personally think should be avoided. I am all for this whole ‘wear what you want not what you think you should’ ethos but professionally, I don’t want to turn up to a client meeting looking like a fat over stuffed sausage in a lycra top or overly clingy nylon skirt with bulging VPL.

Accessories are always a big hit for me, if I can’t make a current trend work for me or I don’t want to buy in to a flash in the pan trend, I stock up on cheap and cheerful accessories that are on trend to get an on trend influence to a more plain outfit. MUCH cheaper than following fashion every season if you want to keep a core capsule wardrobe!

Being a plus sized woman does not mean that you need to mask your shape in black and hide behind plain clothes.  Celebrating your beauty as a plus size (or any size) means understanding how to dress your figure and maximise your assets.

Here are five top tips to show off your figure …

Wear clothes that fit

Squeezing into a dress for the numbers it says on the label won’t result in a good look.  Buy the clothes that fit the best, regardless of what the labels says.  If the numbers really upset you, cut out the label, this is better than squeezing over the top of a too tight pair of trousers.

Buy underwear that flatters and smoothes

Good underwear, including a slip, can really alter the appearance of clothes, creating a more elegant smooth line and holding in the bits of your body that sometimes hang over the top.  Corsets offer a strong defined waistline and all in one body suits can give a beautifully defined figure that leaves your clothes hanging smoothly and looking great.

Personally, I like to make the most of my bust so I always make sure I have a good, well fitting bra on. The difference that a well fitting bra makes is unbelievable, in both looks and confidence.

Know the material that flatters your shape

Personally I believe all woman, bar the sveltest of the svelte, should avoid clingy materials like Lycra and opt for light fabrics like silk or cotton.  Popular online store Isme offers a great range in plus sized clothing, items such as their linen trousers are fabulously flattering for ladies who wear a size 16 plus.

Walk tall

Wear your clothes with pride, if you match your outfit with a boost of confidence and charisma you will look amazing.  Being a larger lady does not mean you are unattractive or unappealing so show the world you are beautiful.

Accessorise well

Match your outfits with a pretty, medium sized handbag and look for some vibrant, large necklaces and bracelets to jazz up a plain suit or one colour dress.  Never forget the importance of shoes to add height to your stature and really make an impression.

Stealing that style with Avenue32

Stealing that style with Avenue32

Hello Lovelies,

I know it’s hard to believe but it’s starting to approach that time, spring and summer wardrobes!

I am taking my ‘sun’ holiday early this year and I’m jetting off in the middle of May. I’m in that tricky predicament of needing to buy holiday clothes now but the high street isn’t keeping up.

I’ve been doing some sartorial stalking for some inspiration. Most of my summer dress drools have been coming from Avenue 32 at the minute.

Avenue 32, being an online boutique brand website offers high end and high quality goodies with the site updated twice a week with new products. No wallowing in old stock here!

With designers ranging from Giles to Zac Posen to Roksanda Ilincic, you get a real sense of high end and an almost one-off feel to each piece.

Naturally the first place I looked was at the bags but hey, a new frock needs a new bag yes?

I am going on a 2 week holiday and I will be rocking my usual kitsch, retro, vintage inspired outfits so I have picked out some of my favourite dresses from Avenue 32, saved to a cheeky folder on my desk top as inspiration for early summer wear!

This pink dress from Antonio Marras is gorgeous and I’d wear this for sightseeing. I’d team it with a little white cardie and some white converse to funk up the girly design.Id even wear this with thick black tights and a blazer back in the UK in the autumn!

Another Antonio Marras wonder, this would look perfect with black ballet flats and a little black clutch for a chic lunch or a nice dinner. I think the print is very 60s Mad Menish with the combination of floral and an almost plaid lower half.

On holiday, being brave in the sun, I’d wear this Thakoon Addition zebra flared dress for some quirky fun. Teamed with flats and big blag sunnies during the day or a pair of sky high heels and a chunky necklace for the night, I like funky dresses you can wear 2 ways… helps cut down on the packing!

Nothing sets off a suntan better than a crisp white dress right? This dress is a flared skater style from Chalayan and is another one you can style up a multitude of different ways. Gladiator flats and sunnies during the day, a pair of creepers and a denim jacket for lunch or a statement necklace and heels for partying on a night time.

For that one special evening, occasion or night out, you cannot go wrong with a statement dress. I find because I favour a more retro style usually, I like to switch it up and pick something effortlessly classic to make more of an impact. This Giles embellished silk gown is just amazing. Grey silk that just hangs so simply and with that excess of fabric that screams high end, oh my its just out of this world. And look at that collar. Pearl beading means no jewellery necessary!

Of course, you could use these images as inspiration to find similar outfits in your budget range or size range (which is what I will be doing!)

Which high end websites do you use to steal style ideas from? What do you think of my top holiday dress picks?

Man Man Manly Man

Man Man Manly Man

Hello Lovelies,

Ok, so I might be channelling the Two & a half men theme tune but today I wanted to talk to you about men. Everyones favourite subject right?

Yesterday saw an interesting article posted on the Daily Mail (Daily Fail) about John Lewis’s newest menswear model – Johnny Harrington. On clicking in to the article I was presented with a manly looking male model, unlike nothing you’d imagine selling high end highstreet clothes. Johnny intrigued me, pulled me in. Piqued my interests if you will.

I was thoroughly impressed that this strapping, manly, rugged looking chap was selling clothes that my husband, a 30yr old ‘manly man’ would want to wear, based on the fact that a rough and tough looking fella was modelling them rather than an 18yr old stereotypical male model. Yes, we all know the type I mean.

I polled Mr Tramp and a few friends, varying from the rugged of rugged to the preened of the preened and there was a VERY strong divide on opinions on Johnny. The more ‘manly’ men of the group all favoured Johnny’s campaign with quotes such as
“He looks like he has a story to tell”
“He’s wordly wise looking”
“Check out that f&%$^& beard, I WANT ONE!!!”
while the more high fashion super groomed folks thought he looked dishevelled and made the clothes unappealing.

I can see it from both side. No one wants to buy in to the clothing ideal, to be wanting an outfit worn by someone they cannot identify with but I absolutely commend John Lewis for bringing in a new flavour to their male models.

Manly?

What does astound me is some of the rude, unpleasant and just down right ludicrous comments I have seen made about the advert and about Johnny himself. So he has a beard and long hair, that makes him any less of a person how? Exactly. Just because he isn’t covered in St Tropez with eyebrows plucked to within an inch of their life, doesn’t mean he CAN’T be a male model. Think of all the unconventionally beautiful female models out there! Just because someone has a beard and long hair, does that automatically mean they don’t care about grooming? Er no.

Hats off to John Lewis and to Johnny for breaking the mold and I truly hope this sees an increase in the diversity of the male modelling world. More manly men please!!!

And just for my own personal benefit…. Here are my 2 favourite bearded hotties…..

Aaron Kaufman and Richard Rawlings.

Yes so I’m slightly biased, cars & hotties… I wonder how much flights to Texas are?…..

VIVA LA MANLY MAN!

What do you think of the new John Lewis campaign? Are you a fan of a manly man? Let me know!

Fit feet for men with Fit Flop

Fit feet for men with Fit Flop

Hello Lovelies,

On holidays and days when I know I will be doing lots of walking, there’s one pair of trainers I rely on time and time again, and that is my FitFlops. For sheer out and out comfort I cannot fault their spongy, supportive comfy soles.

I have the FitFlop Supertones in black leather. They have a cute converse-y/ deck shoe look about them and in the summer with pedal pushers and capri’s they look quite cute and a hell of a lot more practical than primark flip flops!

With this in mind, I have always sung the praises of the Supertones to Mr Tramp. We are going on holiday in May and will be doing massive amounts of walking so I suggested he picked a pair up. Then he wont have to sacrifice his style over comfort. Mr Tramp only ever alternates between Converse and Cat boots! Yawn!

From the new Spring / Summer collection, he has chosen his 2 favourite pairs so I think I shall be stocking up on them to see him through our holiday and the rest of the year.

The Supertop Inky Blue is currently on sale for £44 (RRP £110) and has a really cool edgy vibe and you’d never guess they’re toning trainers would you? Gorgeous colour too!

The Supertone Slate Grey is the more traditional style trainer and reminds me of funky deck shoes which are great for the summer with shorts, linen trousers or even just jeans in the winter! Also on sale, they are currently £36 (RRP £95)

Not only will they give him comfort, help with his posture and get all his leg muscles working in his  fine legs (heh!) they are bang on trend AND FitFlop are currently offering FREE delivery, using the code FFBLOG4

You can browse the full range of mens FitFlops online on the FitFlop website HERE

Shhh, I think I might buy myself a pair of the Inky Blues!
