A day at the races – retro style

Hello Lovelies,

I have been fortunate enough to have been a guest at the races a few times now and I always have a great time. I must admit I am usually more at home in jeans and a polo shirt with a pair of wellies and a wax jacket than in a posh frock but it’s nice to dress up once in a while isn’t it?

You can get a slight inkling of how the combined outfit might look as its not a million miles away from the style I wore for my wedding in Las Vegas

This is my submission to the Casino Choice competition to win a £200 ASOS voucher. You can find more details on how to enter this fab competition HERE.

You can follow all the entries on Twitter by viewing the #CCRaces hash tag.

It will also come in handy as I have 2 days at the races planned this year! Phew!

I sometimes struggle to find retro rockabilly reproduction pieces in plus sizes so I liked to use accessories and styling to bring a vintage spin to my outfits. Thankfully I have a few Bettie Page dresses that I absolutely adore (and stock up on when in Vegas!) The dress is quite conservative in length and style so there’s no need to worry about showing too much flesh and if I got a bit chilly, a plain black silk pashmina would be a simple yet stylish cover up.

I have styled this chic black Bettie Page swing dress with a woven clutch from ASOS . The peeps of red fabric in between the weaves will tie in with my head piece and my trademark red lipstick. Shoes, would have to be my dream shoe brand, Christian Louboutin. I’m a sporadic heels wearer but when I do, I favour classic shoes that never date.

If the Louboutin’s are out of your price range (like me!) Upper Street have a cool online shoe design product in which you can design & customise a pair very very similar for a fraction of the cost.

I would choose to shun the usual extravagant head pieces and fascinators and instead opt for a low key red floral band similar to this, or clip that I would wear to one side. The Libertarian, a local small business makes exquisite and unique pieces, the red band from this site would be perfect AND support a local business. Perfect. When paired with my blonde hair in a loose curled style, worn over the shoulder with the flowers to accentuate, it would be a great nod to vintage pin up girl styling.

I’d keep accessories to the bare minimum. I wear understated black ear tunnels so they would be my earrings and I’d keep my trusty black Ray-Ban Wayfarers to hand ready for the sun to make an appearance.

Make up wise, a healthy bronze, groomed brow, neutral eye shadow, a black cats eye and lashings of my favourite luxurious red lipstick – Chanel Rouge Allure in Pirate and I am ready to go flutter on the ponies!
