Korres Lip Butter

Korres Lip Butter

I have wanted to stock up on these butters for the longest time but I like to buy new brands in person so that I can familiarise myself with them rather than online. I finally found a store in the N.E that stocks the range and jumped in with 2 feet, buying both the Guava and Pomegranate Lip Butters.

Retailing at £6 each, I think they are an acceptable price for the brand. Each pot is 6g and gloriously thick and nourishing and smell delicious.

Each tinted lip butter imparts a gentle wash of colour that is definitely noticeable on my dark lips so will be very pretty and slightly more pigmented on someone with lighter lips. On applying the butter, a little does go a long way and it applies smoothly and without any effort to spread it round due to it’s texture.

The butters themselves have a light fragrance that isn’t overbearing and doesn’t really taste of anything so these are great to use if you are sensitive to scents and flavoured lip products.

I absolutely love the 2 Lip Butters I have by Korres so much so that I have been and bought a further 2 from ASOS.COM (£6 each, free postage) to add to my collection. I am waiting for them arrive but I added Jasmine and Mango to my existing Guava and Pomegranate.

Guava is a light milky white butter which pales out my pink lips but it would be clear on paler pouts. It’s a fantastic smell. I find myself sitting sniffing it idly. Yum. It may sound odd but it has, to me, an almost smokey smell mixed in with pencil shavings! Yes, odd I know. It evokes memories of the drawer in the dresser in my parents house that my parents kept their cigarettes and Dad’s pipe tobacco. To other people it certainly doesn’t smell like that though… don’t worry, I’ve asked them to sniff test!

Pomegranate has a light fruity scent that certainly doesn’t smell forced or overtly synthetic.

A nice natural scent which is great as a lot of scented lip products seem to have that overpowering ‘fake’ smell which I personally find off putting! The Butter is a soft pink with a slight orange understones that could be described as a dark salmon pink. It does look rather potent in the pot but you can easily sheer it out or build it up, which is what I like about these butters. You can apply loads in one go without feeling like your mouth is covered in glue!

I absolutely love these butters and will definitely repurchase now I have finally tried them! They are so yummy and soft with a great longevity. You do get a transfer on to a glass but they still remain very nourishing on the lips.

My only complaint about the product is the packaging. It’s very small and compact but the walls of the pot itself are quite thick and I could see it being an issue trying to scoop the butter out from the bottom of the pot once it starts to drop, and the apperture is a bit tight if you have long nails. It’s fine while the level is still at the top but I envisage it being a bit messy once you get in to using it!

Next on the list…. Wild Rose & Quince!

Pretty Amazing lips – Bare Minerals

Pretty Amazing lips – Bare Minerals

The name says it all, I don’t even need to do a review really as you get what it says on the tin!

I am actually obsessing over these lip products at the minute. I wouldn’t say it was a gloss, or a lipstick, or a stain but it’s a lovely hybrid of all three!

On first application, you are given a high intensity, pigmented gloss that feels gorgeous on the lips and gives an incredible shine.

This does transfer off after your first coffee / snack / kiss but what you are left with is a beautiful, velvety colour to the lips. None of the pigmentation or impact is lost. I’d say this is the lipstick phase of the product.

Even some of the best long lasting lip products barely last an hour on me… I must just have one of those gobs, probably because I never shut up, but after 2hrs, I am still left with the colour on my lips in a pretty matte texture.

The 3 stand out colours for me are Savvy which is described as a pink toffee (i’d say rosy nude), Free Will which is my perfect light nude shade, and Strength, a gorgeous, amazingly vibrant red. Now anyone that follows me on twitter will know that red lipsticks are my ‘thing’. This colour is no exception, not only being my new favourite lip romance, it is also the official colour of the Virgin cabin crew, so the next time you hop on a flight and admire their beautiful red pouts… you can buy it for yourself!

I must warn you though, there certainly is a knack to applying them as the wand isn’t the usual doe foot pad. It is almost spatula like, still covered in the flocking as usual, but it does need mastering. Please don’t let this put you off, but to get the BEST application possible…. SJ Froom, Brand Ambassador for Bare Minerals recommended this her self… wipe the excess of the wand, use the tip as a lip liner to go round the outside of your lips, then the flat part to fill in. You really do get the best application possible if you follow that rather than just slap it on as you perhaps usually would.

The Pretty Amazing lip colours retail at £15 and for the quality, I think they are thoroughly worth it.

Free Will will be my next purchase… in fact I might just go and do a bit of retail therapy at the weekend just to buy it!

You can buy Bare Minerals products from their website, QVC, concessions in stores and various websites.

Outfit Inspiration from Simply Be

Outfit Inspiration from Simply Be
It’s my wedding anniversary next week and we are going for a very posh night out in Newcastle.

I was looking for a chic, glam outfit that still had a bit of sparkle and pop to it. While trawling a glossy magazine website looking for something totally unrelated, I spotted a picture of Kim Kardashian pairing a cobalt blue shell top with a black pencil skirt.

I’m a fan of bright blue so I thought i’d use this as my inspiration to pull an outfit together to wear. I’ll need to buy the pieces but each item out of the set are all ones I can very easily wear again either together or seperately.

I have tried to shy away from a pair of classic black courts in favour of either some funky shoe boots or leopard print and cobalt shoes as a pop or personality.

I’ll wear this with a smokey eye, nude lip and loose waved hair.

This is my inspiration picture, of course being fat and blonde… i’ll never look quite like that! Ha!

Being a curvy girl, my first port of call is always Simply Be. Always on the pulse of fashion and trends, adapting them to suit a plus market… I can always grab something here and know i’m not frumpy in it (unlike Evans!)

1. Cut Out Jersey Top – £35
5. Ruby Shoo Hepburn – £34.99

As much as I LOVE the leopard courts, I can’t quite justify spending that much on them, the black shoo boots on the other hand… oh they are so pretty!  The Ruby Shoo Taylor are also to die for too!

I opted out of the Obi / waist cinch belt as I will be sitting down and having a meal, I don’t want to be uncomfortable with it. Had it been a standy up night out, i’d have snaffled one too.

What do we think? Can you tell I have taken inspiration from Kim Kardashian? Do you like her style?

Boux Avenue – When Katie met Theo…

Boux Avenue – When Katie met Theo…

Friday 23rd saw the opening of the North Easts first Boux Avenue store, in Gatesheads Metro Centre. I toddled on over with Daniella and I met the fantastic Carla and the lovely Victoria while I was there.

We got a chance to meet Theo Paphitis and us girlies jumped at the chance to put him in the hot seat and interview him en masse! Theo talked with a genuine passion and enthusiasm and answered all the questions we put to him in a friendly personable manner. I felt you could tell he hadn’t rehearsed and he meant what he was saying. He explained a little about the bra making process within the design and fit areas. This really intrigued me and I’d love to see how each style is developed.

Sandwiched in the green mall, in a triangle between La Senza and Ann Summers (or a shop thong as Theo put it when questioned), the new luxe lingerie store looks resplendently high end compared to it’s counterparts and neighbours.

If the big black heavy gloss doors aren’t intriguing enough, the fresh crisp white interior and the perfectly dressed displays that lies beyond certainly do pull you in. The well dressed, attentitive Boux Girls also seem to draw you in. Each in their smart black shift dress, adorned with their own unique twist on accessorising. I saw day glo pink, leopard print and purple velvet! The only rule the staff have in regards to uniform is that they aren’t allowed to wear black shoes as that’s dull. I think this is great as each girly gets to impart their own personality on to their uniform without breaking the rules!

Inside the store, the first thing you notice is the gentle but noticeable scent that lingers around the store which makes a pleasant change from the smell of old sweat that seems to linger in some stores (come on, you know the smell I mean!). The smell seems to be the White Chiffon scent which you can buy in store in a multitude of different forms. The store takes on a cross between a chic parisian boutique and swish hotel feel to it, with minimal décor that distracts from the products, you have a few prettily decorated mannequin forms and products dotted around the store in vintage suitcases. Very nice touch!

The underwear is beautifully displayed, you cannot help but feel like it’s a high end experience when presented with the pretty bras up top and then the neat drawers full of extended choices. It was a little bit cool to open the drawers and be presented with neatly laid out bras in varying sizes and colours.

Even the attention to detail on the hangers impressed me

The range is very good with plenty to choose from, plain neutrals, bold colours and patterns all feature. The range runs up to a band size of 40, and after perusing the store, it did seem that there wasn’t THAT many 40s on offer and the ones that were there, looked pretty damn small. Boux Avenue are planning to roll out more lines in larger cup sizes in the near future but at present they are not held in all shops.

There is also a nice selection of loungewear and sleep wear, which coming in to Autumn is all nice and snuggly warm. Just what is needed on these cold nights! If you feel you need your nights ‘warming up’ a bit, they also had a beautiful selection of negligees and silky chemises. These seemed to peak at a size 18/20, which I have to say I find to be a little bit disappointing. Especially when you consider the amount of new plus size lines in shops such as New Look etc going up to a 26. Maybe going up to a larger band size / knicker size would have widened the market a little bit but I’m sure they have done their market research.

Not only can you buy your smalls and snugglys at Boux Avenue, they also hold a line of home & body products, which I have to say, were my favourite part of the whole shopping experience (due to small sizes! BOO!). I love the White Chiffon scent and found they offered the scent in a range of items from a hand lotion all the way up through candles to a reed diffuser. The White Chiffon sits side by side with the Pink Taffeta scent too. White Chiffon felt more fresh and clean while Pink Taffeta was a more heady floral scent.

Moving onwards to the back of the shop, you find the VIP desk and the changing rooms! When you move in to the changing rooms, the flooring switches from white tiles to the softest grey carpet my little toots had ever felt – and yes, I did take my shoes off to have a try of it! Each room has it’s own name and is huge in comparison to a lot of changing room stalls, segregated by a grubby and usually ill fitting curtain! Each changing room has a very very high end, luxe feel to it which again reiterates the luxury shopping experience feel that B.A have designed to make you feel that little bit more special while buying your essentials. In the changing rooms, there are 3 light settings so that you can check yourself out in varying lights to see if your bra choice is a hotty or notty in subdued romantic lighting.

Now I hadn’t ever thought of this, but Daniella pointed out that none of the changing rooms, except the disabled, had a seat in the room. Had she not pointed this out I’d not have spared a thought about it but where else would I dump my handbag now!! She also mentioned that if you are going to be sitting down for most of the day, you need to know your choices are going to be comfy right? Without a chair you can’t do that so it’s something that would be much welcomed. They could have added some beautiful stylish baroque-ish style high back chairs to again push the luxury high end experience and make you feel like you’re sitting on a throne while trying on your slinkies!

Heading back out of the changing rooms, you have a small 2 seat waiting area for those pesky oither halves that like to interfere with shopping time and the VIP desk I mentioed earlier.

Boux Avenue run a VIP club which works as a loyalty scheme, spending X amount to earn points which are then redeemable for money off next purchase. Combined with their current offer of buying the bra and getting matching knickers free, this adds up to being an easy to use scheme. Another great highlight to the shop AND the scheme is that if you are anything like me, you find a comfy bra then go and buy it in every single colour they have yet invariably they never have more of your size. With the Boux Avenue shopping concept, you can pay for the bra’s in store and they will be rush posted out to you at home straight away so you aren’t waiting weeks for your bras to come back in to stock. I think that’s a great idea and should the sizes have been wider, I probably would have taken them up on this.

The crucial point about the store, is the pricing structure. I felt that for the quality of the bras, the shopping experience and choice of styles the products were priced very well and I was surprised that they did not cost more. Prices on average hovered around £5-£8 for a pair of lacy briefs and bras ranging from £12.50 – £28 but most coming in at around £20. The sleep wear is also very reasonably priced and on par with other stores.

When making a purchase, your items come beautifully wrapped in lace print tissue, scattered with White Chiffon scented petals (great for keeping in your drawers at home to make everything smell nice), boxed in a glossy Boux Avenue box and then dropped in to a very swish salmon pink BA card bag. Again, the posh bag and wrapping adds to the buyers experience of high end luxe. Much preferred over being shoved a tatty rustling carrier bag and sent on your way.

Boxes and scented petals in the wrapping area

Overall, I enjoyed the shopping experience in Boux Avenue. Yes, I was a little disappointed that due to the sizing I wasn’t able to buy anything, but hey ho, that’s life innit! I got some beautiful smelly goodies and a toasty warm pair of socks, what more could a girl want for autumn?

No sock picture…. I was wearing them!!

As a follow up to this review, I have a filmed interview with the man himself, Theo Paphitis which I will upload at a later date so that you call enjoy my pierced tongue lisping geordieness!

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Theo for his time, the wonderful girls at Fluorescent PR and also say how much I enjoyed the morning with Daniella, Victoria and Carla – you ladies rock.

Just in case anyone is weirdly interested, THIS is a group shot and one of ME WITH THEO.. If you are reading this with a sensitive disposition.. don’t look… I take a GHASTLY photo. No word of a lie.

Lippie Madam- Burt’s Bees Review

Lippie Madam- Burt’s Bees Review

After watching a Youtube haul video I spotted someone swatching a beautiful tinted lip balm from Burt’s Bees and I decided there and then I had to have it! I sadly couldn’t find it anywhere local so after a Twitter shout out to my lovely followers, I soon had in my little mitts a tube of Tiger Lily. The most beautifully delicate coral peach shade.

The packaging is very cute in it’s design and the cardboard texture really does amplify the brands natural approach and let’s face it, it’s pretty fun sliding it apart to find your hidden lip balm! The cardboard has scuffed up pretty quickly along the edges but it’s been slung in my bag since I got it and it’s been lugged everywhere (It’s even travelled round Cuba I’ll have you know!)

The balm has quite a unique smell to it in the tube, it is a bit like sweeties with a waxy back note but it isn’t an unpleasant smell, it’s quite nice! It doesn’t impart much scent and no taste on the lips which is good as it’s not a flavoured balm.

On one swipe over the lips you are left with a beautifully soft, glistening covering of long lasting balm with a very sheer colour. A few swipes gives a buildable colour without you feeling like you have the full tube on. I have quite deep pink lips so it doesn’t give me great colour coverage but you can certainly tell I am wearing it after a couple of swipes.

You can tell by the swatches (one on pale part of arm and one on the tanned back of my hand) that it is more suited to paler lip tones but I have been using it over the top of a long lasting lip stain / lip ink instead of a clear gloss or balm and I LOVE the results.
Swatched over very tanned skin
Swatched on paler skin
You can feel the moisturisation lasting for a very long time and although it does withstand a few drinks, it does leave a tell tale greasy half moon on a glass.
This is one of those tinted lip balms that would be great for the neutral / back to school / work friend looks that gives you a tiny amount of colour to make it noticeable but not WOAH in your face.
Now I know what the pigmentation and formulation is like, I will definitely be buying a few more of the shades online as these will be a god send in the winter when the wind, cold and heating zaps all the moisture out of lips and you want to keep them looking healthy and gorgeous.

I am looking forward to getting the rest of the set, I do go through lip balms at a rate of knots…. although I think I might try the Burts Bees lip gloss next!!
