Il Piccolo, Corbridge

Il Piccolo Corbridge

On a grim and grey Valentines Day, we found ourselves heading to Corbridge for a brisk walk, some gift shop browsing and of course lunch; which saw us heading to Il Piccolo Corbridge, a family run restaurant, café and deli tucked away off the main street.

A rustic décor was festooned with red hearts in perfect keeping with the day. There wasn’t a special themed lunch menu which suited us as we are a bit a anti V-Day!

I opted for the 2 course for £10.95 lunch time special and Paul went for a pizza from the main menu with us both sharing my starter.

The Sliced Meat starter was a generous serving of delicious cured meats which went particularly well with the bread and oil that was served for the table. Each meat had its own unique flavour and it was clear the choices had been curated for their taste and not just from the shelf of a wholesale. Comfortably shared or a solo effort for a hungry soul.

Paul chose the Vesuvio Pizza (£10.95) from the regular Il Piccolo Corbridge menu and he has praised it so very highly to anyone that would listen since we visited. Likening it to ‘authentic’ pizza we have had on our travels in Italy, he was thoroughly impressed. Wafer thin crispy base and just the right amount of topping made it his perfect pizza.

From the lunch time menu, I went for the Bolognese Al Forno. As you’d expect, the pasta was an oven baked dish. The sauce was quite sloppy but very tasty. It was so sloppy I actually ate most of it with a spoon! Again a generous portion but I felt like it was one of those ‘safe’ dishes they have put on the lunch time menu that can be knocked up quickly and cheaply. I wouldn’t order this if we visited again as it felt half arsed.

The generous portions meant we skipped pudding.

It was a really relaxed vibe and I’m glad we had booked a table as the dining room really started to fill up by the time we were finished. We did get a bit bored waiting for the bill and then ultimately the card machine so we wandered over to the counter to pay.

Despite this, we would definitely return to Il Piccolo Corbridge for their delicious pizzas and antipasti!
