Afternoon Tea at St Mary’s Inn, Morpeth

St Marys Inn Afternoon Tea

Towards the end of February, we raided our piggy bank and stayed at St Mary’s  Inn for a post Valentines weekend away. The review is coming soon so keep an eye out for it!

Whilst we were there, we indulged in one of their new signature Afternoon Tea’s (£14.99)*.

With 2 perfectly brewed pots of loose leaf tea, we were presented with the menu. Cream Teas are also on offer if you don’t fancy the full afternoon tea presentation.

Our goodies arrived on a 3 tiered slate sharing stand, piled high with a huge selection.

The sandwiches at St Mary’s Inn were fresh and well packed with filling. I thought the cheese and pickle one was perfect – I would have ordered that as a full size!

Moving on through the stand, we hit the scones next, all 3 of them! With cream and jam! Blimey! The scones were light and fluffy, the cheese one was delicious but the spiced fruit & blackberry scone was the highlight – lashed in cream, it was perfect! By this point we were starting to feel full so after a quick breather and some more hot tea we moved on to the piece de resisténce – the cakes.

The Chocolate Brownie was quite possibly the most dense, rich, moist brownie I have ever had. It’s a pretty good job it was only dinky as I’d need be in a sugar coma afterwards ! The rhubarb pavlova was just the perfect size and served in a shot glass stopped it being messy. The chocolate was stronger than the lime in the white chocolate and lime macaroon but the best, in our opinion, was the Apple and Almond Tart. The dried apple crisp on top elevated the elegance of the whole afternoon tea!

Coming from the same family as Jesmond Dene House, the confectioneries were definitely to a standard higher than I initially expected from St Mary’s Inn!

Very reasonably priced, the whole selection was perfectly curated and the portions were abundant, which highlights some other venues must scrimp! The quality was as high as I have come to expect from St Mary’s Inn and we were thoroughly impressed.

We did have to go for a very long walk at Druridge Bay to walk it all off!
