It’s that time of the year again, the Sunderland Restaurant Week and boy is it a good one this year. With an influx of hot new places opening, you will be spoiled for choice.
I headed a long to try out 2 of the Sunderland Restaurant Week venues ahead of the launch on September 8th.
With a fairly limited knowledge of the Sunderland dining scene, I was introduced to 808 Bar and Kitchen and The Pickle and I will most definitely be heading back.
During Sunderland Restaurant Week, local foodies can indulge in 3 priced deals – £5, £10 + £15 with each venue offering different courses and set meals for your hard earned pennies.
Towering Burgers are the order of the day at The Pickle. Not only can you soak up the weekends booze with an all day breakfast burger complete with black pudding and hash browns, you can fuel your weekend shopping trip with the most delicious maple bacon burger. A beef patty slathered in maple syrup and topped with crispy american style bacon and onion rings before an extra glug of maple syrup covers the lot. If you love the combination of sweet and savour together, this is well worth a visit!
The halloumi bacon hash browns were the star of the show. Mini nuggets of potato were mixed with salty halloumi and crispy bacon before being smothered in a moreish sauce. They’d make a great bar snack to go with a few saturday afternoon drinks.
Recently opened 808 Bar + Kitchen was the jewel of the night. An achingly hip interior and instagram-worthy touches made our visit to the Sunderland Restaurant Week newcomer a bloggers dream.
With quirky pizzas and even quirkier burgers, the varied eclectic menu has something to tickle most taste buds. Reasonably priced outside of the Sunderland Restaurant Week deals, the spicy garlic prawns, the coconut prawns and the Chinese curry burger were all definitely worth raving about. Oh if only they did deliveries to Durham. Those prawns were what dreams are made of.
With on trend crispy panko coated halloumi fries, crisp calamari and the option of full burgers or sliders, it’s hard not to go mad and try a little bit of everything!
Owned and run by a group of friends who are big in to the music scene, 808 (named after a drum machine) is going to be the place to be. When the food has finished and the lights dim, head on in for selfies and cocktails galore.
Definitely top of my list of recommendations.
