Update review : The budget Clarisonic aka Katie Sonic!

Update review : The budget Clarisonic aka Katie Sonic!
I’ve been using my Champneys’ version of the Clarisonic for ages now it seems and I have yet to tire of it. I just wish I could compare it side by side in use with a real Clarisonic for you all to complete the review so you have all the info.

I received a lot of interest from other bloggers and beauty lovers via Twitter, my blog and via email. Kim over at Dottie K especially loved the idea and even blogged about it herself!

I’m overwhelmed that you all loved my little discovery. I’m just disappointed the price had jumped up since I bought mine….  BUT…..

I’m pleased to tell you, they are currently £9.99 on Amazon (with free saver delivery too!) So snap one up now! At the time of writing this, they had 10 in stock with more on the way.

One thing i’d like to show you is how I keep the heads clean and tidy and stored away whilst in the bathroom.

I use an old plastic pouch that No 7 make up accessories and mirrors come in. They are in with the make up tools rather than on the concession.

The bag itself is a glorified tougher zip-loc bag, a bit like a pencil case! It’s not glamorous but it is jolly useful. I stock up on bits and bobs when Boots do the £5 voucher so the pouches are an added bonus!

Excuse the naff pictures, I was having to use my phone camera and fend the 2 cats off out the way (hence the odd stray cat hair!!)

Review : Sleek – Curacao Palette – Caribbean Collection

Review : Sleek – Curacao Palette – Caribbean Collection

In the final part of my Sleek Week, we have my newest piece, the Curacao palette from the Caribbean Collection.

In the palette you will find 12 bright bold super summery eye shadows, each one crying out to be used in a big bold look. As we have all come to expect, there is the usual mix of mattes and shimmers within this set.
Despite the colours looking so super bold in the pan and in the swatch, I have found myself looking at them and lumping them in to 2 distinctive look groups. First you have the hot warm sunset colours (which is a look I LOVE) and then you have the cool blue greens of the sea. Now I don’t know if this is intentional as part of the whole tropical holiday vibe of the collection but it’s certainly how it makes me feel.
As soon as I got my mitts on the palette (at work I hastened to add) I quickly pulled out 2 EOTD looks, one a warm sunset blend and the other a bold sea green melange.
The blues and green look certainly is bright but you could very easily tone it down, I just wanted to get the product on to my eyes and see how it fared. I do however LOVE LOVE LOVE the orangey reds as I think it really makes my blue eyes pop. It’s one notch up from the bronzes and golds I like to wear to make my eyes pop.
I’ve included a few dodgy phone snaps of the 2 different eye looks I did….. At work…… using only the foam applicator! I don’t think they have come out all that bad! I certainly didn’t get TOO many odd looks for the remaining 9hrs of my working day! I work with men so I doubt they even noticed!!
Hayfever, air conditioning and 12hr working days = blood shot eyes! grrr!
I think the orange, red and yellow will get used more than the blues, but on a neutral eye, they’d look stunning used as a wet powder eyeliner along the lash line to bring a pop of colour.

Here’s my run down on the shades….

1. Tequila Sunrise – Bold orange shade with a tinge of gold shot through it. Almost looks foiled when you pack the colour on. Reminds me of Lucozade! Shimmer
2. Martini – Frosty white, high colour with slight subtle dazzles of pink and gold. Shimmer
3. Blue Hawaiian – Light sky blue, almost baby blue. Needs to be built up as it is light and rather chalky. Matte
4. Bloody Mary – Salmony / orangey red. Reminds me of the inside of a Blood Orange. Bold pigment, light hand needed for applying but takes a fair bit of blending. Chalky Matte.
5. Screwdriver – Bold canary yellow. Very hit and miss on swatching, needs a lot of building, but works as a light swish of sheer colour. Hard work. Matte.
6. Green Iguana – Leafy green. Good coverage and blends beautifully. Shimmer
7. Apres Midori – Bold opulent emerald green. Shimmer
8. Blue Lagoon – Cobalt blue, hard to build, blending was a bit tricky compared to the shimmers. Sadly ended up being next to no different to Blue Hawaiian once on the eye and blended.Matte
9. Purple Haze – Rich grapey aubergine. Blended well, colour went on well. Great alternative crease colour for a smokey eye. Matte
10. Green Martini – Black tinged golden olive green. Stunning colour. Can be dramatic or gentle. Love this as an alternative to a black smokey eye. Shimmer
11. Singapore Sling – Blue toned fuschia. Bold on the eye but with a light sweep can be soft and gentle. Real pop of colour with a tan. I like it on the lower lash line for a different twist on eyeliner. Shimmer
12. Espresso Martini – The usual solid black. Super duper pigmented and a little goes a LONG way. When travelling i’d use this as a brow colour with a v. light hand or as a liner. Great as a crease colour if used sparingly on a brighter look. Matte

This little bad boy will be packed in my holiday make up bag for some bright bold looks on an evening time. You always feel bolder on holiday don’t you? And as I’m off to the Caribbean itself, I need a bit of Ay Carumba in my life! Arriba!

Sleek – Bonaire Pout Polish – Caribbean Collection

Sleek – Bonaire Pout Polish – Caribbean Collection
Bonaire is an orange Pout Polish from the Caribbean Collection. It features the same cute packaging as the Aruba blush and the Curacao palette.
The colour goes on very lightly in a lovely sheer wash. On paler lips the colour pay off would be intensified but on more rosy lips you get a soft and subtle tint. One thing that I have noticed is that for the colour to be applied well, you need your lips to be in tip top condition. When I was swatching this, I had 1 tiny bit of dry skin on my lip and it seemed to collect all the colour and leave one bright orange patch and nothing anywhere else! A quick scrub with the Lush bubblegum scrub sorted this out, but knowing that it clumps the pigment, I’d be wary about taking this out and about for me for quick touch ups.
I keep saying over and over again that I really don’t like the smell of the Pout Polishes and after using the last one, I thought their formula was on the up when the overpowering scent had been toned down. I don’t know if I am overly sensitive to the smell now but it seems to be back in full force with Bonaire. I’ve seen people liken it to a tropical smell but as usual, I can’t get past the Carnauba / car polish smell. Of course I don’t let this put me off, I always like to look past the smell as it is just a personal issue and not a fault of the product itself and I do continue to buy the Pout Polishes as I like their nourishing feeling on the lips combined with the sheer colour and high shine. For £4.30 you use to little of the product they’ll last you a life time.
As I likened the Aruba blush to a more amplified version of Pan Tao, this could be considered to be the louder older brother of Sugar May. Where Sugar May has next to no colour pay off on my natural lip tone, it works amazingly well over a base colour. Bonaire gives that slight tint of colour without the base. Both are beautiful shades in their own right though.
If you are a fan of the Pout Polishes then I really recommend you buy this, don’t let the colour in the pan put you off!
There would be a swatch picture of it on my hands and lips but sadly half way through taking pictures my husband magically “misplaced” it and it’s now nowhere to be found! MEN!

Sleek – Oh So Special Palette

Sleek – Oh So Special Palette

My favourite all time Sleek palette is Storm. I’ve always felt it to be a strong opponent, in my eyes to the Naked palette by Urban Decay, with a perfect mix of glitzy neutrals to bold matte darks which combined together in a 12 pan palette gives you a HUGE choice of looks, from day to night and anywhere in between. It’s the palette I most often reach for. It does everything.

I was happily in love in my relationship with Storm until the pretty new palette came along to tempt me in to cheating on Storm!

Oh So special is a beautiful mix of delicate lights and bold wearable darks in the usual combination of shimmer and matte that we all come to love and expect. Light pretty day looks, strong bold night time party looks, you have it all here in the one palette. This is definitely a budget contender for Nakeds’crown and I’d rather re-buy 5 Sleeks’ than 1 Urban Decay one right?!

I’ve been using this most days since I picked it up and it’s perfect. A matte for the brows, a neutral to highlight and several soft lid colours for a work appropriate look… then when it hits 5pm and it’s party time after work, a quick flick of the darker shades in the crease and you have a sultry dark look to take you in to the wee hours of party time.

For £6.49 what else would give you such versatility? I can’t think of anything, espcially when it works out to be 54p a shadow. The cheapest other eyeshadow on the market that I am aware of are MUA and although they are indeed bigger in size for their £1 price (which are also awesome – check them out) you don’t get the ease and portability or even variety as you do with the Sleek Palette offerings. It makes financial sense, in these budgeting times!

If you’re looking for a new every day set of looks, stuck in a make up rut or just like to hoard Sleek Palettes like I do then this one is definitely for you!

Here’s my run down on the shades :

1. Bow – Super light pink bordering on white shadow. Great for inner eyes and brow bones. A bit chalky – Matte
2. Organza – A rose gold delicate pink. Buildable colour. Slightly duochromatic. Shimmer
3. Ribbon – A salmon pink, again, chalky and a bit tricky to blend but good colour pay off. Matte
4. Gift Basket – Chocolatey rich bronze. Shimmer
5. Glitz – A black tinged teal. Looks gunmetal grey in the pan. Shimmer
6. Celebrate – A black tinged purple / aubergine. Slightly shot with gold fleck with the purple. Shimmer
7. Pamper – A pale baby pink. Again, chalky and quite sheer. Matte
8. Gateau – A gold tinged lilac shade. Super pretty and almost duochromatic on the lid
9. The Mail – A light tan biscuit shade. Very delicate but super useful as a base and to help blending. Barely shows up on me Matte
10. Boxed – Neutral dark taupe / brown. Perfect for brows or soft shadow lining. Matte
11. Wrapped Up – Grey tinged mauve. Great alternative to black for a smokey eye. Matte
12. Noir – needs to explaining. A flat black shadow. Great for lining and crease colour. Matte.
